Stories and highlights

There's always something to celebrate at our school! From exciting events to proud moments and everyday wins, here are some of our highlights.

A year at our school 2026

Taverners Hill goes to Taronga Zoo

On Wednesday 20 May 2026 the whole school went on an excursion to Taronga Zoo to complement our Term Two Science unit Living World.

The Taverners Hill P&C Association very kindly funded the entire excursion.

Our students boarded the bus with great excitement for our trip across the Harbour Bridge to the zoo.

Our first stop was to the Backyard to Bush house for a workshop with a zoo educator on animal life cycles. The students got to meet Herbert the frog and to touch Trapper the short-necked turtle, Luna the ring-tailed possum and Cartier the diamond python.

For the rest of our full day at the zoo the students and teachers explored the other animal enclosures seeing some common favourites giraffes, tigers, chimpanzees, lions and seals as well as other weird and wonderful creatures that live in our natural world.

We enjoyed our lunch looking over the harbour at the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

The students and teachers had a fabulous day of external learning at the zoo which was a hot topic of conversation in our classrooms the next day inspiring our students to want to learn more about the living world.

Easter Hat Parade

On Thursday April 2 we held our annual Easter hat parade, assembly and egg hunt. Our students created their Easter hats at home and paraded them at our assembly along with their preschool siblings.

Our Year 2 students entertained our audience of family members with their recorder playing. Kindergarten and Year One performed the Bunny Pokey. The children from Petersham Early Childhood Education Centre joined us for the morning wearing their hats they had created. Our P&C held an Easter raffle with goodies donated by our families. Many happy families went home with amazing Easter hampers. The highlight for all the children was the Easter egg hunt in the playground at the end of the morning.

Harmony Day 2026

On Wednesday March 18, 2026, we celebrated Harmony Day at Taverners.

Some of the school community chose to wear orange for the day, as orange is the official colour for Harmony Week in Australia. It represents social communication, meaningful conversation, and the freedom of ideas. It was chosen to encourage mutual respect, inclusivity, and to serve as a simple, visible way to show support for a diverse and united community.

The Vegemites and Aeroplane Jellies (our 2026 class names) participated in lessons in class related to Harmony Day. The Aeroplane Jellies investigated a map of the world to see the variety of countries and Australian states their parents and grandparents were born. The Vegemites wrote a class play about the meaning of Harmony Day – being respectful, inclusive and celebrating our differences.

All the children enjoyed special Harmony Day cupcakes at afternoon tea. We all had a meaningful and harmonious day.

A year at our school 2025

Book Week and Grandparents / Special Friends Morning

On Sunday, 10 August 2025, we held a Mini Book Week Fair at the school. School and the local community had a fun afternoon enjoying a storyteller, jumping castle, kids craft, face painting, BBQ and cake, book and preloved costume stalls.

We held our annual Book Week Parade on Friday August 15. The students dressed up as their favourite book characters and paraded them to our school community.

On Friday 22 August we continued our Book Week celebrations with a Grandparents / Special Friends morning. We held a whole school assembly with a student from each grade as the MCs. Each class entertained our visitors with an item based on a CBCA shortlisted book. This was followed by a morning tea and book donation sale in our library. Families, grandparents and special friends could purchase one of our preselected books and donate it back to the school. Each book donated received a donation plaque inside the front cover as a permanent memory.

Aboriginal Experience Incursion

On Wednesday, 10 September 2025, our students participated in an Aboriginal Experience incursion run by Ranger Jamie Tours. The students took part in a traditional Ochre ceremony, learnt traditional and ceremonial dances, learnt all about bush tucker and how different plants are used as remedies for common illnesses, and how this traditional knowledge has been passed down for generations and got to handle real traditional artefacts. The students finished the day by creating their own artworks using traditional symbols and drawings. The students had a fun and informative day.

Sports Carnival

In Term Three our PE lessons focussed on athletics skills and we rounded out term with our annual sports carnival at Petersham Park. Families joined us for the day to cheer on the students. The students participated in age races, relays, hurdles, tunnel ball, modified discus, javelin and shotput and a marathon. The day culminated with a ribbon and medal presentation. The respect and sportsmanship of our students was on display all day as they cheered on their school mates and celebrated their victories.

“We’re so grateful for the way Taverners supports each child’s learning needs and encourages their potential. The welcoming parent and teacher community makes it unlike any other school we’ve experienced.”
